2012-03-18 ACC Lesotho celebrates Chinese classes success
Yuan Tong primary school in Lesotho, established as part of evey Amitofo Care Centre, has successfully obtained a permit from the local education department to operate as a private school.
In addition to the required subjects under the curriculum in Lesotho, Yuan Tong also offers Chinese classes where children get to learn the language under beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. ACC sees this as the first step for the kids to learn more about the Chinese culture, and also a ‘tool’ that will open up more opportunities for them in the future. The Chinese classes sparked so much interest in the school that even some of the local teachers are also attending these classes.
The Chinese teachers have proudly said that the learners in higher grades can already do basic translation. The younger ones will need more time, but they are just as determined as their elder brothers and sisters. In their free time many kids practice the Chinese words or songs that they have just learnt, and despite the fact that they may not pronounce them properly, the teachers said it is very touching to see the effort they have put in to learn this difficult language.
Their determination are captured in the following simple sentences which some of the kids have said:
“Teacher, tomorrow I will start using Chinese to communuicate!”
“We want to speak Chinese to other ACC kids who know the language better than us.”
“Let’s speak Chinese, otherwise the teacher won’t understand us!”
